The Bare Necessities

There isn't a more appropriate car for the beach than Phillip's Karmann Ghia, and it has just what needs.

I've seen this Volkswagen a few times at our local car meets, so when Phillip contacted me I knew exactly what he had, and I couldn't wait.

What you're looking at is a 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. If you're like me, you had no idea what this is before now. They were pretty popular back in the day, but you can't find many now that are still tooling around.

When I asked Phillip if this thing really only had 50 horsepower, he replied with "optimistically". Hearing that it tops out around 75 mph was awesome, yet crazy at the same time. Riding in it I would never guess that's all it had, but that's all it really needs.

No need to worry, Phillip's Volkswagen is on bags! Even though I've never seen it ride higher than low, Phillips assured me that it makes it around town with no problem. Just enough power and just enough height!

One of the most interesting things I learned about this car is the fact that this is the fourth color Phillip has gone through. From dark color to dark color, Phillip finally landed on this perfect color. He also said that when he decided to paint the top white it was one of the best decisions he's made for the car.

I fully believe that Wilmington is one of the best places for a car like this. It fits in, yet sticks out at the same time. Phillip actually received this Karmann Ghia as payment for some parts he gave a friend (granted it was in much worse condition then).

With a boxer engine sitting in the trunk, and empty space in the hood, and the gas cap up front, you know it's a Volkswagen.
A surprisingly good condition interior lays inside (for being parked in the rain for years), and it's by no means a bad ride.
Oh yeah, there's also no roof.

Phillip says that there aren't many plans for it in the near future, other than a possible color change, and I don't blame him. It's not a typical car, and really doesn't need much to be amazing.

I'd like to thank Phillip for his time. His Karmann Ghia was definitely an awesome car to be around, and I can't wait to see what he does to it!
